Chapter 22

Ellie arrived at Gavin’s house and he was at the door waiting for her, his wife beside him. Before Ellie could speak, she was pulled into a bone-crushing hug from Mhairi.

“Thank you for getting him out Ellie, I don’t know what I would have done...” she started to cry, and Ellie patted her back as Gavin shrugged behind her. Ellie detangled herself from Gavin’s emotional wife and, after a hug and more tears for Gavin, she was finally allowed to take him away.

“I take it she missed you then?” Ellie asked as they drove away and waved at the still crying Mhairi.

“Miss me? You’re joking, she’s crying because I hadn’t finished decorating the kitchen when I got arrested and she thought she was going to have to ask Uncle Tony.” he joked but then got serious “No…I think she got a fright is all, and this business with Alex has got her scared for both of us if it’s something to do with drugs or gangs.” He admitted. “By the way…I don’t think I thanked you properly, for getting me out I mean…you’re a good friend Els…” he said quietly as he squeezed her hand that was resting on the gear lever. Guilt rushed over her as she felt his touch.

“Gavin please don’t thank me, it was probably my interference that got your brother killed, he was seen talking to me…I’m the reason he’s dead Gav I’m so sorry. I don’t know how you don’t hate me right now.” She said quickly as if she needed to expel the poison from her system.

“Hate you? Are you mental? Do you know how long I would have lasted in prison Els? You saved me and I’ll never forget that. Alex’s choices killed him, not you. I knew a long time ago that this was how he would end up and I made peace with that realisation years ago. Don’t blame yourself, I don’t.” he said gently with a smile and she returned it with tears in her eyes, she needed him to say that, the guilt was eating her up and she squeezed his hand back as she manoeuvred the car to park outside Janet’s house. They had decided that there was no need for cloak and dagger tonight as there was no reason why Gavin wouldn’t come to visit with his aunt so Janet should be safe if anyone spotted them. Ellie was about to buzz the flat when Gavin stopped her.

“No need Els, I’ve got a key for emergencies, I usually just let myself in.” he unlocked the door and they started up the stairs to the hallway. Janet called to them from the living room.

“Is that you Gavin?” she called.

“Yeah it’s me and Ellie Auntie J” he called back and as soon as they entered the living room, Janet pulled him in for another big hug. Gavin was getting a lot of them today.

“Thank god you’re alright son, I’ve been up tae high doe wi all this.” she said as she inspected him for signs of injury or mistreatment.
